For me, it meant an unexpected return to my home country of South Korea. I had originally planned to continue my work at Columbia University's Biomedical Informatics Department, but with the situation in New York City, I decided to return home. I am pleased to announce that I have joined the Institute of Data Science at Korea University as a Research Professor since January 2021. Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, I unexpectedly returned to Korea from the United States, where I had been primarily accepted as a postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University's Biomedical Informatics department. During my decade of experience in the United States, I have learned the importance of integrating large-scale genomic and clinical data to advance precision medicine. It has motivated me to direct my research toward identifying genetic risk factors for various diseases, improving the predictive models for health outcomes, and advocating for inclusivity and diversity in biomedical research. Our lab's mission is to integrate large-scale genomic and clinical data, including electronic health records (EHR)-linked biobank databases, to improve our understanding of the genetic basis of complex diseases and develop more accurate predictive models for personalized treatment. We aim to apply AI and machine learning algorithms to identify genetic risk factors for various diseases and to develop more inclusive and diverse training models to mitigate predictive biases. In the future, we plan to expand AI/ML in clinical practice to move beyond diagnosing individual diseases and towards a broader system for detecting multiple diseases. By integrating AI/ML systems to analyze multiple data types, such as genomic, phenotypic, imaging, electronic health record, and social factors data, we can learn faster from extended data types and develop more advanced, in-depth predictive models to assist in identifying new biomarkers for more accurate disease diagnosis and risk predictions. Additionally, we aim to develop AI/ML-based predictive models linking functional genomic and environmental perturbations to changes in phenotypes, which have the potential to revolutionize our understanding of disease mechanisms and improve patient outcomes. In addition to our focus on advancing precision medicine, our lab also aims to study the genetic basis of various cognitive, psychological, and psychiatric outcomes, such as cognitive ability, suicidal behaviors, depression, bipolar disorder, mood disorders, or ADHD. By integrating multi-modal biomedical data, including neuroimaging and genomic data, we aim to develop better diagnostic tools and personalized treatments for psychiatric diseases. Specifically, we aim to integrate neuroimaging and genomic data to better understand the genetic basis of mental health outcomes and develop more accurate predictive models for personalized treatment. Our research involves applying AI and machine learning algorithms to analyze multi-modal data, such as imaging (MRI), genetic (genotype), and diagnostic interview (K-SADS) data, to classify individuals' state of mental health outcomes. We welcome undergraduate research interns who share our passion for precision medicine and are self-motivated, curious, proactive, flexible, mature, kind, generous, contributing, and independent. If you have a background in life science, genetics, medicine, cognitive science, quantitative science (computer science, statistics, physics, or other engineering), or any other Arts and Sciences, and some skill sets of data science, including programming (Python or R) and statistics, we encourage you to apply. |
